Looking at the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2011 collection go down the runway, my immediate thoughts were: dark, sheer, and “oooh pretty gowns”. Going in to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to attend Christian Siriano’s show tonight, I could only remember his persona on Project Runway (he embodies “catch phrase”) and his usual very structured, fitted garments with the illusion that there’s always shoulder pads in his jackets.
But I was actually quite pleasantly surprised that his Fall/Winter 11 collection was sleeker, more feminine with sheer maxis and blouses, light and flowy trousers, and with just a hint of heavier masculine edge in his structured jackets and coats. I’d say it is a mix of sophistication with his pants, turtlenecks and jackets and fantasy with his beautiful dresses. Nothing too heavy or too light— it was a perfect variety of Fall/Winter day and evening looks.
His outstanding looks had to be the crimped and straight hair style, pops of dark olive green in sheer blouses, trousers, and maxi gowns, and his final gowns that looked like gardens of taffeta rosettes— all fantasy and dreamlike and nothing industrial.
Some highlights of the show: celebs spotted in front row were British style icon Alexa Chung, Gabrielle Union, and Mena Suvari. Also, one of his models took a huge tumble, but Christian Siriano took the fall gracefully and tweeted: “Yes one of my girls fell on the walk back, she is okay, poor girl! The runway was fresh painted and sticky, kudos to those who made it! haha”
